Many cake decorators begin their professional lives as graphic designers, architects, sculptors, couturiers.
I was a journalist. I took a brief cake decorating course, bought some books, and winged it. So when I’m asked to reproduce a famous and magnificent work of art, I naturally feel a bit like a fraud.
The easiest paintings to copy are those with clearly defined lines.
A painting created using pointillism, for example, – in which small distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image – is just slightly out of my league. The minute someone asks for a Seurat, I’m done for. But in the meantime, I can just about manage this.
