Top Hat And Tail

Cat in the Hat cake

In a backlash against the insipid and dull Dick and Jane, and in an attempt to improve children’s literacy, Dr. Seuss published The Cat In The Hat in 1959.  Not only has it not lost its appeal in the intervening 57 years, it placed ninth on Publisher’s Weekly’s list of best-selling children’s books of all time.

The book has been translated into numerous languages, including Hebrew: חתול תעלול, and even Yiddish:

cat in the hat yiddish

I imagine it would be interesting – and entertaining – to learn to read with that version.
