I was going to write a post discussing a completely different feature of this cake when I got to wondering why many Jewish texts sport the traditional red/purple/pink/brown patchy top edge seen in the photo. Exhaustive research on the topic yielded surprisingly little – in fact, nothing at all. This may be the first time Google has failed me utterly.

So I put it you, the ever-resourceful public, to solve this enduring mystery.
