Here’s what you miss when you don’t do sports and aren’t athletic: cool sneakers designed by Kanye West. These sneakers are called Yeezy Boost 350 Zebra.
The letters SPLY printed on the side either stand for “supply” or are an acronym for Saint Pablo Loves You. According to an expert on Reddit, “Pablo often appears in Kanye’s work and designs but Saint Pablo is an exemplification and explanation of Kanye’s life spirit. A simple slogan can stand for the real pop-soul of Yeezy.”
Well that’s neither here nor there when it comes to cake design. I was hoping I might become infused with the Kanye spirit while making this cake. But I think you need to have the actual shoe in your hand, rather than just be attempting to create an edible version. Either that or I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to receive the affirming spirit rays.
Last time I made a shoe/boot cake, I may have employed the most difficult method possible. I used a butterfly pan and flipped one wing on top of the other to create a sole. Then, with lots of little round cakes, I built up the body of the boot. The result was effective but terribly inefficient and challenging.
This time, I used templates of a sole and sneaker sides and carved right around them. All that was left was to hollow out the area meant for the ankle. Yes, a little adjustment and a delicate hand were necessary, and quite a lot of cake went by the wayside. But overall it was a quick and satisfying operation.
The fun part came in attempting to copy all the distinctive design details – the zebra stripes, the stitched tab on the back, the trademark SPLY logo.
I think I may have to take up sports, just so I can get myself a pair just like this.
