Due to an egregious error, this Raggedy Ann and Andy cake didn’t make it into last week’s Children’s Classic Literature post. Many thanks to a loyal fan who was quick to point out its absence.
Amazingly, these characters are close to 100 years old, appearing first as dolls in 1915 and then in storybook form in 1918. One story per year was published for the next 20 years!
The Raggedy Ann doll first came into being to entertain the creator’s young daughter. When the girl died following a smallpox vaccination (although doctors attributed her death to a heart condition), her father turned Raggedy Ann into a symbol for the anti-vaccination movement.
The characters are still so popular that Hasbro created a new line of plush Raggedy dolls in 2012.
