The Straight Dope

Mondrian cake Jerusalem

Who remembers the post from two weeks ago? In it I commented on Dr. Seuss’ distinctive style, in which no straight lines appear in any of his drawings. The fates were clearly miffed, and struck back with a wallop.

Hello Piet Mondrian.

Mondrian was a Dutch painter who was considered a great artist of the 20th century. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neoplasticism. This was the new ‘pure plastic art’ which he believed was necessary in order to create ‘universal beauty’. To express this, Mondrian eventually decided to limit his formal vocabulary to the three primary colors (red, blue and yellow), the three primary values (black, white and gray) and the two primary directions (horizontal and vertical). Give me strength.

I sought solace online.

This was the closest thing I could find and it has nothing to do with cake or paintings. (Well, it probably hasn’t. I really have no idea what the song is about as I was mostly mesmerized by the singer’s eyes.)

Actually, line frustration aside, I quite enjoy this sub-genre of art-inspired cake. So far, I’ve tackled Picasso, Matisse, Magritte, Haring, and now Mondrian.

Mondrian has had a strong impact on the art and fashion worlds. Nike created Mondrian-inspired sneakers Mondrian shoes

and Yves Saint Laurent designed some very recognizably Mondrian-like dresses.

But here’s where your mind is about to be blown. Silverchair is a popular Australian alternative rock band. Their fifth album, entitled Young Modern, features a Mondrian-inspired cover.

Guess what song is on the second track? You guessed it – Straight Lines – which now that I read the lyrics, has nothing to do with Mondrian at all! (The song is about feeling alone in the world, but making it through tough times and overcoming them. It also appears to be about being content with your place in life, thus walking in a straight line. Wikipedia)
