Just in time for Purim – uploading a holiday classic. This is a great time of year – if you’re Zorro, Batman, or the Man in Black (and if you think that’s a reference to the Will Smith sci-fi movies, then you really need to re-see The Princess Bride. Otherwise you might be like those passengers who asked this man on a Qantas flight to remove his Inigo Montoya t-shirt, because they were intimidated by the slogan…)
In tribute to secret identities, costumes and dressing up for the holiday, I ran a small workshop for children in which we designed, baked, and decorated cookies in the shape of masks. I simply supervised: all the work here was done by Donna, Deena, Ayelet and Chani, who happily ate all the broken baked pieces as well as the dough that was punched out to make the eye holes. Given carte blanche to choose any design they liked, the girls opted for a mix of classic Venetian (with the sticks on the side, a la lorgnettes) and simple ribbon-tie carnival masks decorated in the style of the always-popular ‘pretty, with lots of flowers.’ Not sure if they had more fun decorating or eating the cookies.
Note: Superheroes and villains must really be committed to preserving their secret identities. Otherwise they’d never wear masks, which – as it turns out – have really small eye slits that limit your vision. I know this because the girls personally tried out every one of these mask cookies by holding them up and squinting through them. For some inexplicable reason, the gingerbread versions were easier to see through than their counterparts in plain vanilla. I tried to research it online, but only managed to come up with this rather dense structural analysis of gingerbread. Someone clearly has too much time on their hands!
