These Boots Are Made For Eating

boot cake

There’s something really refreshing about the public’s continuing ability to surprise. Let’s say these Dr. Martens boots are your absolute favourite item of clothing. You wear them everywhere, they make a real statement. Still, does that translate into wanting to chomp into one on your birthday?

Well, clearly yes, and I’ve long ago accepted that my job is not to question. This assignment did pose a real challenge so I attacked it with gusto. The overriding problem was what shape pan would be appropriate for this project, since the trick is to not lose too much cake in the carving process. I do have a relatively large assortment of pans in many shapes and sizes,

but they tend to be of a rather conventional nature. After a long debate, my assistant and I settled on a butterfly-shaped pan. After the cake had cooled, we cut the butterfly in half, turned one wing around and then piled it on top of the other. We then carefully rounded the toe and built up the back end with four small round cakes, narrowing the leg slightly as we went.

With the structure in place, the rest was fairly simple – as these things go. With a photo of the original in front of me as a guide, I scrupulously copied every stitch and detail, down to the last grommet, lace, and ankle tab and made sure not to forget the neon yellow markings on the sole. The high gloss was achieved with a generous coating of piping gel.

If I had to guess, I’d say this was a size 8 ½ boot, more than ample to feed about 30 people. However if you prefer your boots on your feet and not made of chocolate and sugar, you can buy them in just about any colour right here.
