What better time to go all sappy and kitschy than an engagement party? Hearts and rainbows aren’t generally my thing, but this cake was designed for a garden party for a young couple who had just made the big announcement. So I felt free to express all the bubbliness and romance that the occasion required. At least there aren’t any unicorns on the cake.
There are no interesting behind-the-scenes stories to tell about the making of this cake. All you need to know is that inside, there were six layers of mouth-watering gooey fudgy ganache-filled chocolate cake. Enough to satisfy any chocoholic. The scent alone was overwhelming.
To continue the theme, here’s a poem the groom did not actually recite at the party, but I know was thinking nonetheless. To really get in the mood, have a listen to the incomparable Etta James while you read it.
I carry your heart with me
e.e. cummings
i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
