Toy Story

Lego cake

This cake represented another foray into a hitherto unheard-of realm. These Lego figures (famed Lego miner and star of the silver screen Clutch Powers on the left, and Jay, the Blue Ninja on the right) apparently do not fraternize with each other in the Lego universe. However, according to Bricks4949, writing in a Lego chatroom, “If you watch the Ninjago TV series episode “The Royal Blacksmiths” you will hear Cole tell the story of the Blade Cup [which] was found by Clutch Powers! So Clutch must’ve visited Ninjago before!” Well, as long as the cake wasn’t completely anachronistic.

When I received this order, my first thought was that I could actually build an edible structure out of Lego candy to complement the figures. After all, the candy does sort of click together, just like the toy. I could make a Lego mine (unclear to me whether they mine Lego pieces or gold) for Clutch to work in or maybe a pagoda for the ninja guy.

It was obvious within a few minutes that this was not going to happen. So I called in my brother-in-law, the engineer. Let’s just say it’s comforting to know that it’s not just I who am a Lego candy failure. Not only was a pagoda not in the cards, even piling one Lego piece on top of the other proved an impossible task. Each one of these pieces was glued down with icing. There’s an hour of my life that I’ll never get back.
