While I was working on this Keith Haring cake I just happened to be reading a book about art forgery. It’s always amusing when life imitates art.
The recipient’s first request was a recreation of a Jackson Pollock painting. At first glance you’d think that’d be a breeze. Just flick a paintbrush at your cake a bunch of times and call it a day. But actually, once you take a closer look, his work is really quite complex.
My cake would have ended up looking like an unrecognizable tri-toned mess.
Enter second choice: Keith Haring. One of his most famous paintings, graffiti-inspired, is this:
I decided to take advantage of my medium and insert some dimension into it, migrating the dancers from the sides of the cake up to the top.
The result is, I think, very joyful and captures the mood of the original.
