Glee Club

Sometimes, sitting in a Jerusalem rife with crises, it’s difficult to relate to the priorities and cultural tumult going on in America. The home page of Yahoo, for example, carries – almost on a daily basis – a feature discussing which star wore a particular dress better. It usually appears next to a video about mischievous kittens.

Which is why at first I paid little attention to the brouhaha surrounding this year’s Emmy awards, which aired this past Sunday evening. Apparently, this year the producers chose to honour five recently departed legends of the small screen with special tributes. Their choice was hotly debated because they selected Cory Monteith, a 31-year-old star of the hit TV show Glee, who died in July of an overdose. In his very short career, Monteith was known primarily for his portrayal of Finn Hudson in the four seasons of the show, while the other honourees had enjoyed more illustrious careers. Relatives of other TV actors who died this year were up in arms about their loved ones being excluded in favour of Monteith.

Obviously none of the above affects me directly in any way. It’s equally tragic when anyone dies prematurely, and I’m not such a fan of Glee (although I did quite enjoy the first season’s irreverence and refreshing quirkiness), but far be it from me to take a stand on the Emmys issue. Nevertheless, in acknowledgement of a life cut short – a joyful Glee cake (and for those of you wondering what cheerleaders have to do with Finn Hudson, true Glee fans will understand. The rest of you – look it up).
