Everyone knows that if a character on TV or in a movie is supposed to be smart they’re going to be wearing glasses (either that or they’re a superhero in disguise).
But what’s the origin of that trope? According to Business Insider, this stereotype is as old as the 17th century, when only people who needed glasses for more intellectual pursuits actually wore them. If you worked in a field or a factory, glasses were an unnecessary luxury.
Fair enough. But what if people who wear glasses really are smarter? According to a German study, “53 percent of people who graduated from college live with myopia, while only 24 percent of people who didn’t finish high school have the eye condition. Basically, every year spent in a classroom makes it worse.” In other words, the more time you spend reading, the worse your nearsightedness. (Obviously I am not reading enough, as I have never worn glasses.)
Now, combine that information with the fact that clearly glasses-wearers (or at least glasses-wearing librarians) are somehow sexier,
and you start to wonder why anybody would walk around with a naked face.
Which brings us to this week’s cookies. Congratulations to Naomi Vision Boutique which is celebrating seven successful years in business. What better way to mark the occasion than with an assortment of delicious chocolate and gingerbread glasses-shaped cookies? Stop by the store at Even Yisrael 5 in Jerusalem (between Agrippas and Yafo) for a cookie and amazing end of the year/birthday sales on glasses of all types. But hurry, supplies are limited (supplies of cookies, I mean. I’m pretty sure the glasses are available all the time).
