Timing Is Everything

frangipani wedding cake

I guess two days after Rosh Hashanah is as good a day as any to get married. Maybe even better than most. You’ve just cleansed your soul, nobody’s really working until “after the chagim” anyway, you haven’t grown tired of your family yet. But when you scheduled your wedding, did you even give one minute’s thought to the person making the wedding cake?

This cake required me to make about 250 frangipani flowers in advance. How much time could that take? Well, let’s just say an appalling amount of time, especially since after making about half of them, we experienced a particularly humid night; dozens of them simply melted due to the moisture in the air.

The frangipani appropriated my daily schedule, as they wormed their insidious way into preparations for the holiday. Sauté some vegetables, make a few dozen flowers. Bake cupcakes for an order, paint the frangipani. Decorate some cakes, shop for ingredients, frangipani frangipani frangipani.

The bride and groom were much more fun to create, since theoretically I only needed one of each. But while the groom came out adorable and charming the first time,

the bride simply refused to cooperate. I made her several times. Here’s a photo of an early attempt.

I loved this one, except that her open-mouthed and somewhat vacant expression made her look like a ditzy Valley Girl. Considering that I have never met the bride, I didn’t want to make any inadvertent statements about her personality.

The winning entry has a more sophisticated style, although I think I may have overdone it a bit on her lipstick.

However, the adoring looks on both their faces are just right.

I wasn’t necessarily planning on strewing flowers all over the cake board, but Let No Single Frangipani Be Squandered was the motto of this day.
