End Run

football cake

Who’s excited for the Super Bowl? As I’ve mentioned once or twice, I’ve never been much of a sports fan. But give me the chance to pay between $2,100 and $10,557 (I am not making this up) to sit outside for hours on end in frigid New Jersey weather, and I’m in!

This cake was not made in honour of this year’s Super Bowl. Actually, as it turns out the Cleveland Browns have never even played in a Super Bowl and the New York Jets played only once (and won) in 1968 against the Baltimore Colts (a team that doesn’t even exist anymore). But who am I to argue with a football fan – and more importantly, a customer?

This cake was quite a challenge, since the figures had to appear to be in motion, yet still stand upright. However, the Browns player absolutely refused to remain vertical. The result: a failed attempt at a tackle and subsequent face plant in the field. Flexibility and improvisation play an important role in cake decorating.

The Jets player was no more accommodating; you’re looking at my third attempt at a running quarterback. But perseverance (and skewers stuck up both his legs) prevailed and here he is scoring the winning touchdown.
