People often mistakenly think this cake is meant to look like a hat – which is a little odd when you think about it, since there are ants (sugar!) climbing up the side of it. Yet, the truth is that cake decorating is really not that dissimilar to millinery (the business of making or selling women’s hats), a fact I discovered recently when called upon to create hats for a local production of My Fair Lady.
Really all that was required to put these hats together was an appreciation of form and proportion (no colour sense came into play, since they were all variations on a black and white theme) – key elements in producing a cake that’s pleasing to the eye. In fact, any of these hats would make a very striking cake. And whereas with a cake a delicate hand, perishability of ingredients, and gravity are inconvenient considerations, with a hat all you need is a glue gun and a wild imagination. If only Israeli women had less conservative taste, I’d seriously be considering a change of profession!
