Cupkie {noun}: a. Cupcake with a cookie on top,
b. Made-up word, coined by Temptations chef Rachel Miskin.
So you’d think that the cupkie would’ve taken off by now…
I had the challenge of incorporating cookies for a Cookie Monster-themed birthday onto a cake. Since chocolate chip cookies are Cookie Monster’s raison d’etre it seemed important to make them an integral part of the design. That’s how the cupkie came to be – delicious chocolate chip cookies (to match those crumbs pouring out of Cookie Monster’s mouth) affixed onto a creamy cupcake with blue frosting (to match his fur). Brilliant idea, I thought.
Did not make for such brilliant eating, though.
I failed to take into account the preferred method for eating Oreos – where invariably the consumer will twist off and separate the cookie parts and then devour the frosted centre separately. Apparently people* prefer to be food purists, and all – bar none – removed the cookie from the cupcake and ate each separately.
I guess it’s no peanut-butter-and chocolate combo (by the way, I do make a fabulous peanut butter cake with chocolate ganache filling – but that’s for another post…)
On the plus side, the recipient was only 2 years old, so he loved the cupkie! And I have it on good authority that Cookie Monster himself said “Me want Cupcookie!” (okay, he’s not particularly eloquent, but it’s the thought that counts).
* “people” meaning a control group of tasters for the leftover cupkies – a small sample, no question, but connoisseurs nonetheless.
