There’s nothing like classic literature, be it Dickens, Bronte or Ludwig Bemelmans. There are certain images that, with just one glimpse, evoke a rush of childhood memories. Some of my favourite assignments have been to recreate the front covers of beloved children’s books.
There are few North American adults who wouldn’t instantly recognize this simple bedtime favourite, and clearly they’ve shared these stories with the next generation.
Clifton Fadiman thought that works that become classic books have their start in childhood, saying that “If you wish to live long in the memory of men, you should not write for them at all. You should write what their children will enjoy.”
Here are a few others that have stood the test of time.
