The news came as a shock. After 146 years, the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus is closing down.
Animal rights groups had been protesting the participation of animals, particularly elephants, in the acts so they were phased out. The subsequent declining sales and high operating costs resulted in the show closing its doors come May.
