Or is it? Actually, I’m fairly certain that this chess board represents a somewhat amateurish level of game play; just because I was tasked to create a chess board birthday cake doesn’t mean that I’ve suddenly become a grandmaster. After all, I’m no Susan Polgar or Valentina Gunina (and yes, mercifully the title is still grandmaster – not grandmistress, which has a bit of a sordid ring to it, don’t you think?).
I never did really learn to play chess, a failing I could definitely remedy, but not in enough time to design a cake. To be honest, the choice of which pieces to leave on the board had a lot more to do with the ease of shaping them than anything else. Obviously, the knight is the most challenging piece because it’s the only one with real features (you’ll notice there are only two of them in evidence). However, because the others have a more spare design, they must all come out uniformly – quite difficult!
I wanted to show a game in progress – rather than all the pieces lined up for start of play – but one in which the end was in sight. How many moves to checkmate? If you would like to try and solve it, drop us a line here.
