Mr. Incredible

Incredible Hulk cake Jerusalem

Ah superheroes. They never go out of fashion. I think that might actually be one of their lesser-known super powers. Here you think a superhero has been relegated to the dust of campy 70s TV, but then there he is, back in your life, bursting through a brick wall. And who can blame his enduring popularity? Just a quick look at the trailer for the 2008 movie, The Incredible Hulk, says it all. He really is undeniably appealing.

Now that is one angry superhero.

Unbeknownst to me, the Hulk is actually one of the Avengers (no, not these guys. If only.), appearing in quite a few films in recent years. If you’re really interested in all the dirt, you can read about it here.

In any event, as far as I could tell, the Hulk’s trademark move is crashing through walls. Oh, and also grunting, plenty of grunting. Since I wasn’t able to add sound effects to the cake, I figured I needed to really emphasize the brick wall angle. I wanted him to appear to be bursting out of the cake, right at you. It may be difficult to tell from the photo but the Hulk figure is actually not flush against the side of the cake. His body is about one inch deep, giving the impression – one hopes – that his momentum through the cake is simply unstoppable.

Have you ever stopped and wondered, during a superhero movie, who has to deal with all the mayhem and carnage once the good guys have finally saved the day? Buildings are razed, cars overturned, entire public transport systems derailed. No, no one ever thinks about the little guy, the guy whose wall is now gaping open after the huge green monster has come through town. Just saying.
