It’s always interesting to hear someone else’s take on what, to you, seems pretty straightforward.
The circular saw blade making its way through this cake reminded one person of the type of movie scene we’ve all encountered way too many times. Here’s just one example.
Of course if you look at the cake from the back, it’s instantly clear that the blade, should it continue on its path, would miss the carpenter by a mile.
Someone else was reminded of MacGyver, the 80s TV hero. He could fix any problem with a paper clip and a credit card. Although someone like him would scoff at the riches arrayed here.
One critic thought the screwdriver resembled a guitar of all things. Well actually, on closer inspection, I can kind of see that.
This cake was made for my father’s birthday earlier this week. While he’s no James Bond, or MacGyver or Indiana Jones (a friend once told me that my father reminded her of Harrison Ford. Well you know, because Ford’s first career was as a carpenter), he is quite handy with a hammer and a saw.
Generally, I have only a vague picture of who a cake recipient is – his hobbies, a few salient features. But I’ve had many years to study my own father. So I could incorporate all the little details that make him distinctively him. These included his khaki crocs, his ragged work pants, the tufts of Ben Gurion-like hair on the sides of his head, etc. And while the finished product is certainly not an exact replica, I think it resembles him enough that you’d be able to pick him out of a lineup.
Since I was at the party, I made sure to reclaim the little figure before the first cut was made. I’ve often regretted having to give up the cutest of my creations when handing over a cake. Case in point:
Not this time. This little guy now has a permanent place on a shelf of the desk made recently by his namesake.
