Cake of the Week is celebrating its 4th anniversary, which amounts to 208 entries! When I first started this blog I had absolutely no idea how I was going to fill the space week after week. Some cakes simply have no stories behind them, or really just speak for themselves. Some are challenging in the sort of way that would interest absolutely no one. But as the weeks rolled by I realized that the posts were only partly about cake, and that elements of my own life were working their stealthy way into print.
What have you learned? That I’m indifferent to sports, children’s TV, science fiction and superheroes. That I’m incapable of drawing a straight line, I was a lousy gift-giver as a child, that I become petulant when asked to recreate a cake I’ve made before, and that I will use this forum to natter on about virtually anything. I mean, parallels between Groundhog Day and Tu Bishvat?
Now all this soul-baring might seem inconsequential to you, but I’m the kind of person who would be happiest with no online presence at all. Of course it’s harder to sell cake if nobody knows who you are….
Cakes are not like children. You can definitely choose favourites. So in honour of this auspicious occasion, here’s a look back at what I consider this year’s top ten cakes. Click the titles if you’d like to re-read the blog posts.
