Who among you is experiencing a vague feeling of déjà vu? Haven’t I seen this cake here in the somewhat recent past? Well, yes and no. Here it is in its original form, appearing in March 2014 (and yes, of course I expect you to have catalogued every previous post in your memory. Why wouldn’t you have?):
Now, I’ll allow that the differences are subtle. The feats of balance are even more impressive this time – why, there are three pairs of cards on the bottom level whereas the first time there were only two, and so on on up. Of course, I’m not sure how impressive it is when you’ve glued them securely to each other with royal icing, but nobody else needs to know about that.
The chief difference however, just in case you hadn’t picked up on it, is that the first time the highest card value was five. That’s because I had no way to make the clubs and spades etc. smaller and I didn’t want to end up with gigantic cards. This time, having mastered that problem, the numbers go all the way to ten!
Next time, it’s face cards or bust.
