Knit One, Purl Two

knitting cake

My grandmother, who lived in a different city from us, tried umpteen times to teach me to knit. I’d start off enthusiastically but then she’d return home and almost immediately I’d mix up my knits and my purls and the thing would dissolve into a knotty mess. I’ve never liked wearing scarves anyway.

Turns out fondant knitting is somewhat less difficult. However, what I really wanted to create was a braided figure eight design (which you can see exhibited clearly on the blanket – knitted by my grandmother – that’s acting as a backdrop to this photo). I tried it every which way but it was doomed to failure. Granted, working on it during a fast day was probably not a recipe for success. In any case, I think the pattern that emerged – sans figure eights –would have made my grandmother proud.

Some other time I’ll tell you how I got those tennis racquet strings so straight.

OK, I’ll tell you now. Raw spaghetti! I have a friend who can crunch her way through most of a package as a snack so I could honestly say that the entire cake was completely edible.
