As is frequently reported, Israel boasts one of the highest concentrations of foreign journalists in the world. Reporters flock here in astounding numbers to cover the unfolding events in this tiny country. So I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised to receive a call requesting a Santa Claus cake for a holiday party, though I’ll admit that it was a first for me.
Growing up in Canada, I was not one of those Jewish kids who appreciated the lights and decorations and Christmas music on the radio. I didn’t feel left out, I felt smothered by it. How refreshing it is to live in a country where Christmas is not an unavoidable preoccupation for an anticipatory two or three months, amazing that one can easily overlook the fact that the holiday is approaching, is here, has passed.
All this to say that I had conflicted feelings about this cake. Santa Claus is not a religious figure and the party guests were not Jewish. Why should I care about how they celebrate their own holiday?
Who would have expected a theological quandary in this business?
Needless to say, I went through with it. I’m still waiting for the lightning to strike.
