The only instruction for this cake was: “We need something for Parashat Bereishit” (the opening chapters of the book of Genesis). Hoping the recipients had a sense of humour, I decided to focus on the moment directly following that fateful one.
The idea was for this to somewhat resemble a pop-up book, with the trees springing from the pages. A dismayed and ashamed Adam and Eve are perched on the edge of the book, with the bookmark separating them. The snake is beating a hasty retreat off the back.
Maintaining the book theme, there are short snippets of text interspersed throughout.
Now I can’t say for sure which of these trees is meant to be the Tree of Knowledge. But I do know that the apple core was a great source of dismay for some who, purists and Midrash scholars all, insisted that I represent the forbidden fruit as a fig, stalk of wheat, etrog (citron) or grapes. I say, lighten up. There’s nothing funny about a stalk of wheat with its head bitten off.
