I made this cake after seeing the design in a book and being struck by its beauty. Of course I’d seen Delftware before, but had never really given much (any) thought to its history or provenance.
Turns out the cake is really a pale reconstruction of the famous and intricate tiles that originated in Delft in the 17th century. The tiles ranged from purely decorative to narrative – some depicting Bible scenes, others mundane and even crass daily routine. And you’re in luck, because The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is currently hosting an extensive exhibit of some newly salvaged pieces.
Everything you ever wanted to know about Delftware, including the story of how a 17th century merchant ship was attacked and looted by pirates in the South China sea, set adrift, foundered on a shoal and sank with a treasure of Delft tiles can be heard (in Hebrew) here:
If this only served to whet your appetite for Delft, the exhibit runs until November 1.
