The couch cake is an entire genre unto itself in cake decorating circles – and yes, there’s a flourishing cake decorating sub-culture that discusses such pressing issues as the relative merits of gum paste versus fondant, and methods for producing the most authentic edible wood grain. Enthralling, I agree.
The traditional couch cake features, appropriately enough, a couch potato (of the husband, not tuber variety), a bag of snacks, a sleeping dog, and a TV in the foreground. However, the recipient of this cake was clearly a fan of the classics – a woman after my own heart. Now a real challenge would be to feature the actual text in the opened book, instead of just squiggly lines. Microcalligraphy class, here I come.
