Behind The Scenes

basketball cake

I’ll admit that there is a certain amount of skill involved in cake decoration, and I’ve spent the last 10 years painstakingly honing that skill. But it’s become increasingly clear that of almost equal importance is simply owning the right tools – and I’ve got an enormous closet full of baking pans, cookie cutters, rolling pins, impression mats – well, you get the idea – to prove it.

This basketball cake is a perfect example. And every tool I used was acquired just within the last year.

The ball was made in two mini ball pans and then fitted together.

The red border, the rope on the net, the black lines on the ball, and the hoop were all made using the fantastic tool pictured below, which was designed for use with clay but works equally well with fondant. The variety of attachments allows for a uniform and textured product – great for hair, grass, and in this case, rope.

The fondant for the ball’s surface was rolled out using this rolling pin.

In another context, this could be a sweet dotted-Swiss feature for a baby cake or a bridal shower but make it orange and suddenly a basketball emerges.

The boy, needless to say, was made the old fashioned way, with all his features – the stripes on his sweat socks and shorts, the strands of hair, his eyelashes (I know you can’t see them, but they’re there all the same) – meticulously painted on. I’m still waiting for the tool that will take the guesswork out of that, but then where would the fun be in that?
