Rosh Hashanah is rapidly approaching. Time for the soul searching and stock taking to begin, but also the quest for a new New Year’s cake! In years past I’ve focused on an apple theme – universally recognizable and also quite attractive (as opposed to a shofar which, granted, serves an important function, but is somewhat less aesthetically pleasing).
To make this cake, I enlisted the help of an artist friend who came over to teach a crash course in still life painting. The goal was for the apple to look as if it were a watercolour painting. Turns out you (well, I) can’t really learn that technique in half an hour. Still, I figured nobody was expecting a museum-worthy piece and if it was too good, they wouldn’t want to cut it anyway.
The beehive is made of two parts, to enable the user/eater to open it up and reveal a cup of honey.
The apple seeds embedded in the cookies are made of mini chocolate chips.
One customer wasn’t fond of eating Granny Smith apples so he requested that his cake come in red.
Mine is not to question.
Anyway, back to the point. Of course this cake is available for anyone to order at any time. Happily though, I have many repeat customers and while people have been very enthusiastic about the cake, they understandably are not interested in receiving a replica of it year after year.
That’s where you come in. Here’s your chance to express your creativity and enter the first annual Original Rosh Hashanah Cake Idea Contest. No suggestion is unwelcome or too unusual. The winner will receive two dozen apple slice cookies (pictured above on the right side of the cake) to be delivered anywhere in Jerusalem, and the satisfaction of seeing his/her idea featured in a future Cake of the Week post (attributed to you or not – whichever you prefer).
Enter as many times as you like. If the winning idea is submitted by more than one person, the prize will go to the one received first. Entries may be sent via the Contact Us link on this site. Contest ends August 15.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
