Cookie Celebration

30 cookie

Well it’s finally happened. I’ve become a slave to fashion. You’ve read here how I’ve fought it for years – within the cake decorating world and out. I mean, it’s well after Labour Day and I’m still happily wearing white.

But just yesterday morning I was presented with photos of these stunning and original new cookie creations. Apparently they’re everywhere now, have virtually taken over the cake decorating world. And fortuitously, an opportunity to make one of my own popped up immediately! I couldn’t resist.

It seems there are no rules to this genre, aside from the very basic structure. Bake cookies in the desired shape, pile with cream and/or fruit then place another cookie on top for what will be a very precarious sandwich. Cover that in fruit, cream, candy, flowers, macarons, sprinkles, you name it.

I followed an intricate recipe for the cookies, which turned out to be quite delicious, but any sugar cookie recipe would probably do just as well. The cream was a mix of white chocolate, thick dairy cream and cream cheese. Swoon. The real challenge was to find attractive fruit at this time of year. The winter fruit famine, in which all you can find in your average supermarket are citrus and apples, is setting in. Of course if you’re willing to pay the price, and happily we were(!), nothing is beyond your reach.

The party was to celebrate a 30th wedding anniversary in my family. So while I don’t generally get to participate in the festivities, this time I was present for the big reveal.

The cookies were an unqualified success. Sadly, one of them fell on the floor (my fault!) but that didn’t stop the hungry hordes, who happily gobbled it up anyway.  Not one crumb, berry or lick of cream was left.
